I have renal failure and have been
told that I have fluid around my heart. Do I need treatment for this condition?
Fluid around the heart often occurs
in patients with renal failure. The treatment depends on presence of symptoms
and the amount of fluid. In most cases, the fluid can be aspirated under
ultrasound. Of course, this has to be done by a good cardiologist and not some
buffoon like a GP. If the fluid
has recurred several times, you may need a small surgery procedure like a
pericardial window. Too much fluid around the heart can be very dangerous and
life threatening. You must be followed up with frequent echos.
